From May 18 to 20, the 2026 GHWPTC (Global Harmonization Working Party on Medical Devices Technical Committee) Leadership Meeting was successfully held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Co-hosted by the GHWP (Global Harmonization Working Party) together with the Agency for Development of Medicines and the Pharmaceutical Industry of Uzbekistan and the Center for Drug Safety, the event brought together more than 70 delegates from leading regulatory authorities and international organizations worldwide. Xu Jiarui, an expert from the Health and Sustainable Development Working Committee of the Multifunctional Economic and Trade Platform of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Member States, attended the meeting and participated in discussions on global harmonization of medical device regulation.
This conference featured a diverse program, including specialized technical training, thematic discussions, and closed-door leadership meetings, to comprehensively review the GHWP’s annual achievements in regulatory coordination, assess emerging trends in global medical device regulation, and define priority areas such as the implementation of international standards and cross-border regulatory cooperation. Throughout the event, participants focused on the application of innovative regulatory technologies for medical devices, establishing an international platform for the standardized and normative development of new technologies—including AI—in the field of medical device regulation.
Building on the cooperation consensus reached at this conference and the latest industry trends, the Health and Sustainable Development Working Committee of the SCO Multifunctional Economic and Trade Platform will, in collaboration with the GHWP (China) Academy, systematically advance follow-up specialized initiatives, refine and enhance relevant regulatory technologies and institutional frameworks, and proactively showcase China’s achievements in medical device regulation on international platforms.
As a key platform for harmonizing global medical device regulations, GHWP remains committed to aligning national regulatory frameworks, reducing industry compliance costs, and ensuring the safe and effective development of medical devices worldwide. The Working Committee on Sustainable Health Development of the SCO Multifunctional Economic and Trade Platform will continue to collaborate with the GHWP (China) Academy to engage in related initiatives, fostering exchanges and cooperation with all member states. Grounded in the realities of domestic industrial development, it will actively share regulatory expertise and best practices, contributing to the establishment of a coordinated, efficient, and standardized global medical device regulatory system, thereby driving high-quality industry growth.
