Wang Yi Meets with Chilean Presidential Candidate and Next UN Secretary-General Nominee, Michelle Bachelet

China News Service BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) — On June 4, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, met in Beijing with Michelle Bachelet, the former President of Chile and a candidate for the next United Nations Secretary-General.

Bachelet outlined her views on the international situation and the role of the United Nations, stating that the UN is an indispensable platform for the international community to jointly address global challenges. In today’s world, amid mounting turmoil, we need more—not less—multilateralism. The United Nations should, through reform, return to its founding principles, uphold the authority of its Charter, remain action‑oriented, and advance in a coordinated manner the three pillars of peace, development, and human rights, adapting to the times to better meet risks and challenges. I firmly adhere to the one‑China policy, highly commend China’s longstanding commitment to promoting multilateralism and the work of the United Nations, and stand ready to join China and the international community in strengthening the UN’s status and role.

Wang Yi stated that President Bachelet’s remarks reflect her profound reflections on the work of the United Nations, as well as her sense of responsibility and enthusiasm for advancing the cause of human progress. China has always been a steadfast supporter and an active contributor to the UN’s endeavors. Last month, I traveled to New York to preside over a high-level Security Council meeting and engaged in in-depth exchanges with all parties. There was broad consensus that, in the face of a complex and volatile international landscape, the UN’s status and role can only be strengthened, not weakened, and that the Organization is expected to undergo reform to reinvigorate itself, enhance its capacity for action, and demonstrate an even greater impact. We stand ready to continue working together with all parties to safeguard the United Nations, revitalize it, and strengthen its role.

Wang Yi stated that the United Nations Secretary-General is the UN’s highest administrative official, entrusted with a vital mission and significant responsibilities. The selection of the next Secretary-General will shape the trajectory of the UN’s reform and development over the next five to ten years and directly affect the core interests of UN member states, particularly those in the Global South. China will participate in the election of the next Secretary-General in a responsible and constructive manner, working to restore the UN’s authority and vitality, ensure it better adapts to the new landscape, and more effectively address emerging challenges.
