In the late spring and early summer, Zhongnanhai is awash in lush greenery and vibrant flora. Upon Trump’s arrival, Xi Jinping extended a warm welcome. The two heads of state walked and talked, pausing from time to time to admire the ancient trees—sturdy and majestic—and the colorful roses scattered throughout the garden.
Xi Jinping pointed out that President Trump’s visit was a historic, landmark trip. Together, we have defined a new framework for building a constructive and stable China–U.S. strategic relationship, reached important consensus on maintaining stability in economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation across all fields, and appropriately addressing each other’s concerns, and agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues. This visit will help foster mutual understanding, deepen mutual trust, and enhance the well-being of the peoples of both countries. It also reaffirms that, on the basis of mutual respect, achieving peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation—charting the right path for China and the United States—is what the people of both countries desire and what the peoples of the world aspire to. President Trump seeks to make America great again, while I am committed to leading the Chinese people toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Through strengthened cooperation, China and the United States can advance their respective development and revitalization. Both sides must earnestly implement the important consensus we have reached, cherish the hard-won positive momentum, stay on course, remove obstacles, and promote the steady development of bilateral relations.
President Trump stated that he was deeply grateful to President Xi Jinping for inviting him to visit Zhongnanhai. He described this visit to China as a resounding success, drawing worldwide attention and leaving an indelible impression. The two sides reached a series of important common understandings, concluded numerous agreements, and resolved many outstanding issues, all of which will benefit both countries and the world at large. President Xi Jinping is an old friend of mine; I hold him in the highest regard, and we have forged a strong and constructive relationship. U.S.-China relations are of paramount importance and will surely continue to improve. I stand ready to maintain candid and in-depth communication with President Xi Jinping and look forward with great enthusiasm to welcoming him to Washington.
