BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) — On the evening of May 14, President Xi Jinping hosted a banquet at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to welcome U.S. President Donald Trump on his visit to China.

The Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People shone with dazzling lights, and the two heads of state delivered remarks one after another.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period. With over 1.4 billion Chinese people drawing on the profound foundations of more than 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, China is advancing Chinese-style modernization in a comprehensive manner through high-quality development. This year also commemorates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, as more than 300 million Americans are rekindling their spirit of patriotism, innovation, and pioneering, propelling the United States into a new stage of development. The peoples of China and the United States are both great peoples; realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can and should proceed in parallel, mutually reinforcing one another and benefiting the world.

Xi Jinping emphasized that 55 years ago, China and the United States launched “ping-pong diplomacy,” opening the door to a relationship that had been frozen for more than two decades—a landmark event in the history of contemporary international relations. Since then, the two countries have continued to write inspiring chapters of friendship through numerous instances of openness and cooperation. Under the new circumstances, President Xi and President Trump have held multiple meetings and phone calls, helping to keep China-U.S. relations broadly stable. Both sides agree that China-U.S. relations are among the most important bilateral relationships in the world today—relations that must be nurtured and strengthened, not allowed to deteriorate. When the two countries cooperate, both benefit; when they compete, both suffer. They should be partners rather than adversaries. The two leaders agreed to build a constructive strategic stability framework between China and the United States, promoting the steady, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations, and bringing greater peace, prosperity, and progress to the world.

Xi Jinping pointed out that, throughout the course of China–U.S. relations, whether the two countries can achieve mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation is the key to the stable development of their bilateral ties. China–U.S. relations are closely linked to the well-being of more than 1.7 billion people in both countries and to the interests of over 8 billion people worldwide. We should jointly shoulder this historic responsibility and ensure that the giant vessel of China–U.S. relations continues to sail steadily along the right course.

President Trump expressed his profound gratitude to President Xi Jinping for the warm hospitality extended during his visit to China. Today has been a wonderful day—a significant visit marked by constructive and positive dialogue between the two sides. The peoples of the United States and China share mutual appreciation and respect, and their friendship runs deep and enduring. U.S.-China relations are the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and the two countries must strengthen cooperation to build a brighter future for the world.
