BEIJING, April 20 (Xinhua) — On the afternoon of April 20, President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman at the latter’s request.
Xi Jinping pointed out that China attaches great importance to developing its relations with Saudi Arabia and consistently upholds the principles of mutual respect, equal treatment, and mutually beneficial cooperation. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the China–Saudi Arabia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and China stands ready to take this milestone as an opportunity to deepen strategic mutual trust, strengthen practical cooperation, expand exchanges at all levels, and continuously broaden and deepen China–Saudi relations, thereby setting an example for the development of China’s relations with Arab countries.
In light of the current situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region, Xi Jinping emphasized that China calls for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire to halt hostilities, supports all efforts conducive to restoring peace, and remains committed to resolving disputes through political and diplomatic channels. The Strait of Hormuz must remain open for normal passage, as this serves the common interests of the countries in the region and the international community. China supports the countries of the region in building a shared home characterized by good-neighborly relations, development, security, and cooperation, enabling them to take their own future and destiny into their own hands and thereby promoting long-term stability and security in the region.
Mohammed stated that Saudi–Chinese relations are of a strategic nature and that developing ties with China is of paramount importance to Saudi Arabia. Current conflicts in the Middle East undermine the security of Gulf states and severely disrupt global energy supplies and economic activity. Saudi Arabia is committed to resolving disputes through dialogue and seeks to prevent further escalation of the situation. China is a responsible major world power that has consistently upheld an impartial stance, supporting good-neighborly relations and dialogue and cooperation among Middle Eastern countries. Saudi Arabia stands ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China to uphold the ceasefire, prevent a resurgence of hostilities, ensure the safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and jointly explore ways to achieve long-term stability and security in the region.
