BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) — On the morning of April 10, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, met in Beijing with a delegation from the Kuomintang led by its chairwoman, Cheng Li-wen.

Xi Jinping extended a warm welcome to Zheng Liwen and her delegation on their visit. He pointed out that the reunion of the leaders of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China after a decade is of great significance for the development of inter-party relations and cross-strait relations. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all members of the Chinese nation; the people of all ethnic groups, including our compatriots in Taiwan, have jointly founded a unified multi-ethnic country, jointly written the glorious history of China, jointly created the splendid Chinese civilization, and jointly fostered the great national spirit. Together, they have forged the shared conviction that the territory must be indivisible, the nation must remain united, the nation must not be fragmented, and the civilization must never be interrupted—convictions that have guided the Chinese nation in its relentless pursuit of self-improvement and ensured the continuous vitality of Chinese civilization.

Xi Jinping emphasized that, regardless of how the international situation or the situation across the Taiwan Strait evolves, the overarching trend of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation will remain unchanged, and the broad tide of compatriots on both sides of the Strait drawing closer to one another and uniting as one will also remain unchanged. Compatriots on both sides of the Strait share a common aspiration for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, for the improvement and development of cross-Strait relations, and for a better life. This is an inescapable responsibility of both the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, and it serves as the driving force for their joint cooperation. We stand ready, on the shared political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence,” to work together with all political parties, organizations, and figures from various sectors of Taiwanese society, including the Kuomintang, to strengthen exchanges and dialogue, so as to pursue peace for the two sides of the Strait, promote the well-being of our compatriots, and advance the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation—ensuring that the future of cross-Strait relations is firmly in the hands of the Chinese people themselves.

Xi Jinping put forward four proposals on the development of cross-Strait relations.

First, we must steadfastly promote spiritual affinity through correct mutual recognition. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share common roots and origins, a shared cultural heritage and ethnic identity, and are bound by blood—making them a community with a shared future. When family members live together, as long as they communicate openly and consult one another on matters big and small, no conflict or difference can prove insurmountable. Differences in social systems are no excuse for sowing division. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, as well as compatriots on both sides of the Strait, must stand firmly on the national stance, carry forward and promote Chinese culture, strengthen their identification with the Chinese nation, Chinese culture, and the great motherland, and bolster their confidence, integrity, and self-assurance as proud Chinese citizens.

Second, we must steadfastly uphold peaceful development as the cornerstone for safeguarding our common home. The Chinese mainland and Taiwan both belong to one China; China is the shared homeland of the Chinese nation. For compatriots on both sides of the Strait to safeguard and build this common home, the fundamental principle is to adhere to the 1992 Consensus and oppose “Taiwan independence,” with the core being the recognition that both sides of the Strait are part of one China. When the family is harmonious, all undertakings prosper. We welcome any proposal that promotes the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and we will do our utmost to advance any endeavor that serves this goal. “Taiwan independence” is the chief culprit undermining peace across the Taiwan Strait; we will never condone it nor tolerate it in the slightest. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, as well as compatriots on both sides of the Strait, must uphold the greater national interest, oppose “Taiwan independence” separatism and external interference, promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and firmly safeguard the Chinese nation’s common home.

Third, we will steadfastly promote people-to-people exchanges and integration to enhance the wellbeing of our compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The goal of developing cross-strait relations is to enable our compatriots on both sides to enjoy a better life. We will continue to uphold the principle of “one family across the Strait,” proactively delivering practical benefits, doing good deeds, and addressing the difficulties faced by our Taiwanese compatriots. The Chinese mainland boasts magnificent landscapes and a vast market; we warmly welcome our Taiwanese compatriots to visit often, encourage young people from Taiwan to come to the mainland for exchanges and career development, and facilitate the entry of Taiwanese agricultural and fishery products as well as high-quality goods into countless households on the mainland. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, together with our compatriots on both sides of the Strait, should work jointly to expand exchanges, interactions, and integration across the Strait, thereby strengthening the bonds of kinship and enhancing the wellbeing of our compatriots on both sides.

Fourth, we must steadfastly pursue national rejuvenation through unity and struggle. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, whose lifelong aspiration was the revitalization of China and the reunification of the country. Today, we have successfully embarked on a path of Chinese modernization, and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is an unstoppable historical trend. We are firmly convinced that an increasing number of our compatriots in Taiwan will come to a correct understanding of the mainland’s social system and development path, and will deeply recognize that Taiwan’s future lies in a strong motherland and that the interests and well-being of our compatriots in Taiwan are inextricably linked with the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. This year also marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period on the mainland, and we stand ready to share development opportunities and achievements with our broad ranks of compatriots in Taiwan, working together to strengthen the Chinese national economy. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China should consolidate mutual political trust, maintain constructive interaction, unite compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and join hands to create a bright future of national reunification and national rejuvenation.

Zheng Liwen stated that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all descendants of Yan and Huang, belong to the Chinese nation, have been nurtured by Chinese culture, and are, in essence, one family of Chinese. It is only natural that they should join hands to advance the cause of rejuvenating China as proposed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China should uphold the 1992 Consensus—their shared political foundation for opposing “Taiwan independence”—strengthen mutual political trust, make full use of their communication platforms, and commit themselves to safeguarding Chinese history and promoting Chinese culture. They should also promote exchanges and cooperation across all fields, including grassroots, economic and trade, and cultural exchanges, support the development of youth exchanges, enhance the common well-being of the people, advance the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, usher in a bright future for these relations, and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
