Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, February 5 — On February 5, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, replied to Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of Laos, jointly announcing that 2026 would be designated as the "China-Laos Friendship Year" and launching a series of celebratory events.
Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Laos are good neighbors and good friends, bound by shared mountains and rivers and united by generations of friendship; they are also like-minded comrades and partners, sharing a common destiny. In recent years, the two sides have pursued development through mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, and have risen to challenges through solidarity and collaboration. On issues involving each other’s core interests, the two countries have firmly supported each other, bringing tangible benefits to their peoples. I have held numerous meetings with General Secretary Thongloun and President Bounnhang, reaching important consensus on deepening the building of a China-Laos community with a shared future and charting a course for the development of relations between our two parties and two countries under the new circumstances.
Xi Jinping emphasized that with the beginning of a new cycle, all things are renewed. China-Laos relations are now at their best in history and are poised for broad prospects for development. China has always viewed China-Laos relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. We are willing to take the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Laos—and the “China-Laos Friendship Year”—as an opportunity to carry forward our traditional friendship, deepen practical cooperation, strengthen strategic coordination, and lead the way in building a China-Laos community with a shared future, thus making greater contributions to promoting regional peace, stability, and common prosperity and development.
In his New Year greeting to Xi Jinping, Thongloun stated that under the personal care and guidance of General Secretary and President Xi Jinping, the traditional friendship between Laos and China has become even stronger, political mutual trust has continued to deepen, and comprehensive strategic cooperation has yielded abundant results. I will direct all relevant Lao departments to work closely with their Chinese counterparts to successfully organize a series of celebratory events marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and China as well as the “Year of Laos-China Friendship.” Together, we will build a high-standard, high-quality, and high-level community with a shared future for Laos and China, continuously elevating bilateral relations and practical cooperation across all fields to new heights in the new era, and setting an example for building a community with a shared future for mankind.
