BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — At around 10:30 a.m. on August 26, a mudslide on the Nepalese side resulted in heavy casualties and loss of contact at the Jilong Port in Jilong County, Shigatse City, Tibet.
Following the disaster, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the People’s Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, attached great importance to the situation and issued important instructions, emphasizing that the immediate priority is to do everything possible to search for and rescue those who remain missing, evacuate and resettle affected residents, promptly provide medical treatment to the injured, and minimize casualties. He also stressed the need to strengthen monitoring and early warning systems, prioritize scientific rescue efforts, and prevent secondary disasters.
Xi Jinping emphasized that we are currently in a critical period for flood control. All localities and relevant departments must adopt an extreme‑case mindset and a bottom‑line approach, earnestly implement all measures for flood and typhoon prevention, strengthen the identification and rectification of various risks and hidden dangers, resolutely prevent the occurrence of serious and extremely serious disasters, and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.
Li Qiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, issued instructions emphasizing the need to promptly verify the number of missing and affected people, mobilize all available resources to carry out emergency rescue operations, and evacuate at-risk residents in an orderly and timely manner, while ensuring that rescue efforts are conducted in a scientifically sound manner and that secondary disasters are rigorously prevented. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was directed to strengthen communication and coordination with relevant countries, promptly share information, and work together to ensure the effective implementation of rescue and relief measures. With the main flood season still underway, the National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Office for Disaster Prevention, Reduction, and Relief were instructed to guide local authorities in conducting thorough assessments of disaster risks and hazards, enhancing monitoring and early warning systems, and taking proactive measures to mitigate risks and protect lives.
In accordance with the important instructions of Xi Jinping and the requirements of Premier Li Qiang, Zhang Guoqing, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, led responsible officials from relevant departments to the scene to oversee rescue and response efforts. Tibet has mobilized all available resources to carry out on-site search-and-rescue operations and related work. At present, these efforts are ongoing.
