A Chinese fishing vessel rescued five Sierra Leonean fishermen at sea.
AKRA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — By reporter Gao Jianfei: In Freetown, it was reported that the fishing vessel “Yuan Yu 708,” operated by China National Fisheries Corporation Overseas Co., Ltd., recently rescued five Sierra Leonean fishermen in Sierra Leone’s waters.
According to the vessel’s crew, heavy rain and towering waves were prevailing at the time of the incident. While engaged in fishing operations, Captain Wang Pingchao of the “Yuan Yu 708” spotted a small fishing boat transmitting a distress signal. He immediately suspended fishing activities and directed the vessel to proceed at full speed toward the scene.
Upon arrival at the scene, the small fishing vessel was fully submerged, and five fishermen were without life-saving equipment, facing the risks of hypothermia and drowning after prolonged immersion. The crew of the vessel “Yuan Yu 708” immediately activated the emergency response protocol and reported the situation. The representative office of China National Fisheries Corporation Co., Ltd. coordinated operations and dispatched another fishing vessel, the “Chang Rong 3,” carrying medical personnel to the area to provide assistance. The crew deployed life‑saving flotation devices, transferred the fishermen one by one onto the rescue vessel, and provided them with warm clothing, food, and drinking water. They also administered basic medical care and offered emotional support to calm the distressed fishermen.
Following the completion of the rescue operation, the vessel duly reported to the Sierra Leonean Maritime and Fisheries Authorities. Subsequently, officials from the Sierra Leonean Navy and representatives of the local media boarded the vessel to offer their condolences, commending in high regard the Chinese fishing vessel’s professional rescue capabilities.
