BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) — Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, President of the People’s Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized on the morning of March 30 while taking part in a voluntary tree-planting activity in the capital that a healthy ecological environment is for the benefit of all and must be built through concerted efforts. He called for organizing and mobilizing broad participation from all sectors of society in afforestation and greening initiatives, so as to enhance the beauty of our mountains and rivers and make the underlying tone of Chinese modernization even more vibrant.

In the capital city of Beijing, the spring breeze is gentle and all things are thriving. At around 10:40 a.m., Party and state leaders Xi Jinping, Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi, and others arrived by vehicle in Baishan Town, Changping District, where they joined local officials and residents in a voluntary tree-planting activity.

The tree-planting site is designated as parkland under the master plan, and once the park is completed, it will provide the public with an ecological leisure space.

Upon seeing the General Secretary arrive, cadres and members of the public who were planting trees warmly greeted him. Xi Jinping waved in return, picked up a shovel, and headed to the tree-planting site, where he joined Beijing municipal officials, leaders from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, local cadres and residents, and Young Pioneers in getting to work.

Shoveling soil, building earthen embankments, carrying water for irrigation—Xi Jinping went on to plant numerous saplings, including Chinese pine, Beijing peony, elm-leaved plum, eucommia, and Japanese maple. As he planted trees, he inquired about the children’s studies and daily lives, their participation in labor and physical training, and their involvement in the tree-planting activity. Xi emphasized that young people, like saplings, are full of vitality and hope; they should cultivate lofty aspirations from an early age, develop a love for knowledge, work, and nature, and strive for well-rounded development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and vocational domains, so as to grow into pillars of society. The atmosphere at the scene was vibrant and bustling.

Xi Jinping engaged in cordial conversations with the cadres and members of the public present. He stated that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China has witnessed continuous dual increases in both forest area and forest stock volume, as well as sustained dual reductions in the area of land affected by desertification and sandification, making it the country that has achieved the greatest and fastest greening worldwide. As a result, blue skies, green lands, and clear waters have become the new normal. Recently, China promulgated the Ecological and Environmental Code, further solidifying the legal foundation for building a Beautiful China. Afforestation is a crucial task in this endeavor; we must remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting our green mountains, focus on the present while keeping a long-term vision, pass the baton from one generation to the next, and work diligently to ensure that this undertaking—beneficial to both the nation and the people—is carried out in a thorough and effective manner.

Xi Jinping emphasized that this year marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period and also the 45th anniversary of the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign. Under the new circumstances, advancing national greening requires greater emphasis on improving quality, fostering industries, and benefiting the people, so as to achieve coordinated efforts in planting and management, synergistic promotion of ecology and industry, and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. We must make comprehensive use of green spaces, aligning greening initiatives with land and water resources, and tailor measures to local conditions to expand green coverage—planting trees where appropriate and grasses where suitable. We need to redouble our efforts to strengthen management and protection, implement sustainable forest management on a zonal and categorized basis, vigorously and effectively advance the conservation and restoration of grasslands, comprehensively enhance the quality and functions of forests and grasslands, and safeguard greening achievements through fire prevention, pest control, and other protective measures. We should also smooth the channels for converting the value of ecological products, bolster the forestry and grassland industries, and simultaneously elevate both economic value and ecological benefits. Moreover, we must coordinate urban and rural greening and beautification, making the most of every available space to increase green areas close to people’s homes, so that urban and rural residents alike can enjoy greater access to green spaces.
