The platform has appointed Academician Aji Aikebair Aisa of the Chinese Academy of Engineering as a Lifetime Honorary Advisor to its think tank.
Recently, the inaugural meeting of the Think Tank Committee on Hepatobiliary Surgery of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Multifunctional Economic and Trade Platform, along with an international conference on health cooperation and exchange in the fields of hepatobiliary and pancreatic medicine, was held in Beijing.
During the conference, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Multifunctional Economic and Trade Platform appointed Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Xinjiang Medical University, Aji Aikebair Aisa, as its Lifetime Honorary Advisor to the Think Tank. Hu Kaiqiang, Secretary-General of the Platform and Deputy Director of the Committee on Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Overseas Chinese Affairs, and Foreign Affairs of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, presented Academician Aji Aikebair Aisa with his appointment letter.
Aji Aikebair Aisa, male, of the Uyghur ethnicity, was born in September 1966 in Artux, Xinjiang, and is a member of the Communist Party of China. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering—the first academian from Xinjiang’s medical and health sector—and currently serves as Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Xinjiang Medical University. He is also a professor and doctoral supervisor, concurrently holding the positions of Director of the China–Uzbekistan Joint Laboratory for New Drugs under the Belt and Road Initiative and Vice Chair of the Ethnic Medicine Professional Committee of the 12th National Pharmacopoeia Commission. He is a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress, a National Model Worker, and a recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund—the first in China’s ethnic medicine field—along with being a Qihuang Scholar. He has been selected for the National “Hundred‑Thousand‑Ten‑Thousand Talents Program” and the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ High‑Level Talent Program, enjoys a special government allowance from the State Council, and has been awarded the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation, the China Pharmaceutical Development Award for Outstanding Contributions to Innovative Drugs, and the Outstanding Contribution Award for China–Uzbekistan Friendship. In 2025, he was included in the global top 2% of leading scientists, and in 2026, he received the highest science and technology award of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
Academician Aji Aikebair Aisa has devoted more than 30 years to research on traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicines in the border regions. He established China’s first database of medicinal resources in arid areas, systematically cataloging over 6,000 compounds from 62 commonly used medicinal materials, and developed 25 chemical reference standards, including artemisinin ketone acid, thereby filling critical domestic gaps. He has also built an integrated technological platform for identifying bioactive constituents, ensuring quality control, and facilitating new‑drug translation, thus spearheading the standardization and industrialization of ethnic medicines. In Uzbekistan, he set up a research and development hub, securing five local drug‑production approvals and setting a benchmark for pharmaceutical cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. During his tenure as a deputy to the National People’s Congress, he successfully advocated for the inclusion of “supporting the development of traditional medicine in ethnic minority areas” in national legislation.
