BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — On the evening of September 8, President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at the latter’s request.
Xi Jinping extended his congratulations to Rishi Sunak on assuming office as British Prime Minister, noting that China and the United Kingdom are comprehensive strategic partners. Despite differences in social systems and national conditions, the two countries’ common interests outweigh their differences. He emphasized that both sides should respect and trust one another, transcend disagreements, seek common ground while setting aside differences, and work together to expand the pie of mutually beneficial cooperation. Both governments are committed to economic development and improving people’s livelihoods, and can leverage their respective strengths to achieve mutual support. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, China will further open up its education, healthcare, and financial sectors, all of which represent areas with significant potential for bilateral cooperation. As major science and technology powers with abundant resources in education, culture, sports, and other fields, China and the United Kingdom should maintain an open and forward-looking mindset and strengthen exchanges and cooperation across all domains. He expressed the hope that the British side will fully safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese investors. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and major global economies, both China and the United Kingdom support multilateralism and open trade, uphold the central role of the United Nations, and should enhance communication and coordination within frameworks such as the UN, the G20, and the World Trade Organization, so as to advance a more equitable and orderly world multipolarization and an inclusive, universally beneficial economic globalization.
Burnham expressed his agreement, noting that he served for many years as Mayor of Manchester and has maintained longstanding friendly ties with China. During President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United Kingdom in 2015, he paid a visit to Manchester, which played a significant role in advancing exchanges and cooperation between the city and China. The British side stands ready to ensure policy continuity toward China and remains committed to developing a long-term, stable strategic partnership. Britain is eager to engage in high-level exchanges with China, advance bilateral cooperation across all sectors, strengthen people-to-people and cultural ties, and restore bilateral relations to their highest-ever level, thereby delivering greater benefits to the peoples of both countries. On the Taiwan question, the UK’s position remains unchanged. Amid today’s turbulent and complex international landscape, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, the UK and China should work together to resolve pressing global issues through dialogue, jointly address global challenges such as climate change, and join forces to safeguard world stability and prosperity. Burnham commended China’s efficient and robust response to the mudslide disaster in Gyirong, Tibet, and expressed gratitude for the assistance provided to affected British nationals.
