BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — On the afternoon of August 18, Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno, who was on a state visit to China.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Ecuador. Regardless of how the international landscape evolves, China consistently views China–Ecuador relations from a strategic perspective and with a long-term vision, and stands ready to work together with Ecuador to elevate bilateral ties to new heights and deliver greater benefits to the peoples of both countries.

Xi Jinping emphasized that China and Ecuador should consolidate political mutual trust and continue to demonstrate mutual understanding and support on issues involving each other’s core interests and major concerns. China respects and supports Ecuador in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions, and stands ready to strengthen exchanges across all sectors—between governments, legislative bodies, political parties, and more—while enhancing the sharing of governance experience, so that the two countries can advance hand in hand on the road to modernization. The series of new advances in China–Ecuador relations reflect both the benefits unleashed by the bilateral free trade agreement and the immense potential of China’s super‑large market. Both sides should enhance the alignment of their development strategies, implement the cooperation plan for jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, and effectively carry out collaborative projects in energy, minerals, infrastructure, finance, and other fields. They should also actively explore cooperation in areas such as the digital economy, green development, new energy, and artificial intelligence, and continue to tap the full potential of the free trade agreement, ensuring that its benefits reach more businesses and consumers. China is willing to work with Ecuador in health care, poverty alleviation, disaster prevention and reduction, and other fields, thereby supporting Ecuador’s national development. Furthermore, the two sides should strengthen exchanges in education, culture, youth, sports, and local-level interactions, facilitate people-to-people exchanges, and deepen the friendship between the two nations.

Novoa stated that China is an important partner and friend of Ecuador, and that President Xi Jinping is a great leader. Through the joint efforts of both sides, Ecuador–China relations have entered a new phase, bringing tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries. The Ecuadorian side stands ready to deepen political mutual trust with China, support China in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respect China’s position on the Taiwan question. Ecuador attaches great importance to cooperation with China and is committed to strengthening mutually beneficial collaboration in such fields as trade and economics, finance, minerals, renewable energy, science and technology, and culture; expanding exports to China; and welcoming more Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Ecuador, thereby helping Ecuador improve the lives of its people and achieve national development.

The two heads of state exchanged views on the situation in Latin America and the Caribbean. Xi Jinping emphasized that China has consistently maintained that the status of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace must not be undermined, that the path of development and revitalization pursued by the countries of the region must not be interrupted, and that their right to independently choose their partners must not be interfered with. China supports the Latin American countries in upholding independence and self-reliance, conducting foreign cooperation in accordance with their national interests, and safeguarding regional peace and stability. Novoa stated that Ecuador attaches great importance to China’s position and role, and stands ready to remain a good friend of China on the other side of the Pacific.

Following the talks, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation agreements in such fields as the green industry, economic and trade cooperation, the digital economy, and people’s livelihood.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping hosted a welcome ceremony for Novoa in the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People.

Upon Novoa’s arrival, a guard of honor lined up to pay their respects. The two heads of state then ascended the reviewing stand as the military band played the national anthems of China and Ecuador, and 21 ceremonial gun salutes were fired over Tiananmen Square. Accompanied by Xi Jinping, Novoa reviewed the Honor Guard of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and observed the parade.

That evening, Xi Jinping hosted a welcome banquet for Novoa in the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
