The Platform’s Committee on Urban Development and Cooperation, in partnership with South Africa’s ROLESA, is working together to boost regional economic development.
Recently, a delegation led by Wang Li, Secretary-General of the Working Committee on Urban Development and Cooperation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Multifunctional Economic and Trade Platform, paid a visit to the Traditional Leaders’ Development Agency of South Africa (ROLESA). The two sides held in-depth working talks and reached an important consensus on drawing on China’s development experience to bolster regional economic development in South Africa.
During the talks, both sides drew on the respective development strengths of China and South Africa, unanimously recognizing that China’s proven experience in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization can effectively catalyze economic development at the grassroots level in South Africa. Looking ahead, they will leverage local resource endowments, tailor industrial strategies to regional conditions, and promote localized, sustainable upgrades to regional economies.
According to reports, the two sides will continue to deepen cooperation across three key areas—industrial and educational capacity building, cross-border industrial collaboration, and regional leadership development—while innovatively establishing a one-stop matchmaking service platform that integrates “regional development, Chinese expertise, and Chinese industries.” This initiative will create a streamlined pathway for Chinese enterprises to invest in, establish operations in, and manage their businesses in South Africa, thereby fostering efficient two-way economic and trade linkages.
At the same time, both sides have explicitly committed to comprehensively expanding their cooperation framework, engaging in all‑round, in‑depth collaboration across multiple sectors—including infrastructure development, new energy, the green economy, traditional medicine, agricultural cultivation, animal husbandry, mining, regional healthcare, and international economic and trade cooperation—so as to facilitate the successful implementation and sustained growth of more high‑quality projects.
This round of talks was organized under the leadership of Letsiri Phaahla, head of the ROLESA institution. It is reported that he previously served as the Premier of South Africa’s Limpopo Province and has long been deeply engaged in local governance and regional economic development. Selabi Masibi and Prince Manene, representatives of South Africa’s traditional leadership, also took part in the exchange and discussion.
Wang Li expressed his anticipation that both sides will accelerate the establishment of a higher-level, institutionalized platform for long-term cooperation, continue to deepen practical exchanges, and extend a sincere invitation to South African traditional leaders and representatives of relevant institutions to visit China for fact-finding missions and exchanges, so as to jointly explore new opportunities for China–South Africa economic and trade cooperation.
