China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The Philippines' deliberate encroachment and provocation at sea are the root cause of the tense situation.
Author:
China News Service Beijing, August 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Monday that the Philippines' deliberate infringement and provocation at sea are the root cause of the tense situation.
A reporter asked: On Monday, a Chinese ship appeared to use water cannons against a Philippine vessel near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea. A spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard posted on X platform that near the Scarborough Shoal, Philippine vessels and fishermen encountered "dangerous maneuvers and interception" by Chinese vessels. Can China confirm this? What are your comments?
Wang pointed out that the Scarborough Shoal is China's inherent territory. On August 11, the Philippines sent multiple coast guard ships, government vessels, and so-called fishing boats to intrude into the territorial waters of the Scarborough Shoal, and Philippine military aircraft simultaneously intruded into the airspace of the Scarborough Shoal. The Philippines' actions seriously infringe upon China's sovereignty and rights, seriously endanger peace and stability at sea, and are egregious in nature. China has taken necessary measures in accordance with the law to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, which are reasonable and legitimate.
Wang said that facts have once again proved that the Philippines' deliberate infringement and provocation at sea are the root cause of the tense situation. China urges the Philippines to immediately stop its infringement and provocation and not to challenge China's firm determination to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
Another reporter asked: According to reports, when a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer mistakenly entered Chinese territorial waters off the coast of Zhejiang Province last July, China fired at least two shells, citing a warning shot. The report said that due to operational errors, the Japanese ship's electronic nautical chart did not have the switch to display the boundaries between the high seas and the territorial waters of other countries turned on. Can China confirm this? What are your comments?
Wang said that regarding the incident of a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ship intruding into Chinese territorial waters last July, China has previously stated its position. According to relevant provisions of Chinese law, foreign military vessels must obtain the approval of the Chinese government before entering Chinese territorial waters. China will deal with foreign military vessels that enter Chinese territorial waters without China's approval in accordance with the law and regulations. (End)
